The aSymmetry Project sets out to merge the worlds of art and skateboarding.  This is a grassroots project where artists from all walks of life, with different styles and methods create unique, one of a kind works of art using skate decks as their canvas.

Each artist is then paired with a skater who brings their own style and aesthetic to the table. The decks become living works of art as the skaters take them to the streets. Through this process, the decks are transformed.

Each deck is worn down and added to at the same time, shedding and picking up paint from each ledge, rail and bowl it touches. At the end of the day, while some may see just another beat up skate deck, others will see much more.

Every scratch, every scuff, every dent and every chip out of the board will tell a story.

Just as much thought and passion went into these marks as into every ink line and brush stroke. A discerning eye will be able to gain insight into the skater’s style and how they chose to skate the deck. Some decks might end up barely touched, while others will come back heavily worn and maybe even broken.

Freedom and creativity are central to the aSymmetry Project. The project thrives off of the ingenuity and innovation of all involved.

Ultimately, the decks will be put on display, flanked by a print of the pre-skated deck as well as images and stories from the artists and skaters.

This project will expose the commonality between art and sport. It will bridge the gap between two communities and will provide an opportunity for collaboration, exploration and discovery. Finally, it will provide a platform for emerging artists and skaters to gain exposure by being part of a larger project while providing those more established with an opportunity to give back.

The end result will be a series of art exhibits showcasing each unique collaboration.

How It Works? The aSymmetry Project provides blank skateboards to artists who are free to use any method or style to convert the decks into original works of art.  Each artist is then paired with a skateboarder who brings their own style and aesthetic to the table.

The decks become living works of art as the skaters take them to the streets. Every scratch, every scuff, every dent and every chip out of the board will tell a story. Each deck is worn down and added to at the same time, shedding and picking up paint from each ledge, rail and bowl it touches.

The show came to the Unit/ Pitt Gallery Vancouver, BC, August 12th and 13th, 2016.
