BLADE PARK Fingerjam Contest & Gallery Nov 2017 by CalStreets

Blade Fingerboard Park and CalStreets Present Fingerjam Nov 2017

From before BLADE PARK was even finalized Friday night till the moment doors closed the next day the shredding course had fingerboarders anxiously squeezing in as many tricks as they possibly could. The highly addictive set up was carefully designed by Justin Litchfield and Adam Longair. It featured an array of Blackriver-Ramps provided by Rick Tetz of CalStreets, Justin himself and Board Kennel. These ramps were laid out with flow and creativity in mind. Featuring so many gaps that some even went un-noticed, it was a pleasure that could be enjoyed by left handers and right handers in all stances. With a mixture of low key spots and others that truly demanded that higher level of skill the park was and could be enjoyed by all skill levels.

The fourth installment of Fingerjam included a Best Trick and best run contest. Contestants had two minutes to throw down their best tricks. The final four made it to round two where a winner was ultimately decided between Adam and Ivan. The best trick portion of the contest took place on one of the more difficult portions of the course where there was a gap to down rail.

There was a lot of close makes in the best trick contest but Robert Daucette took home the prize of a Board Kennel deck and trucks and wheels from CalStreets. He nailed a kickflip overcrook to fakie with supreme style and ease. A notable mention goes to Jeff Maw with a very fluid kick flip up onto the platform with an effortless back lip down the rail. Richard Dietl was the only one who pulled away from the kick flip trend stomping a variel heelflip up onto the platform.

Well, he won last time and this time. Maybe the name of the event should simply be, beat JJ. Bailey Marshall, Angeleena Berukoff, Byron Pelly and JJ made the final four and each received a deck from Board Kennel for their achievement. It was a hard fought battle and was tough to pick a winner but in the end it was JJ who took home 1st place which entailed receiving more free product including Trucks and Wheels from CalStreets.

How in the world are these events judged? We caught up with the judges to talk about it, here is what they had to say. ā€˜ā€™Itā€™s not always about who is doing the hardest tricks, consistency and how riders utilize the park is crucially important. It is one thing to land the hardest trick possible but to float around the park and make it look good is more of a complete run. Think about professional skateboarding, when they mess up they keep on going. We arenā€™t looking for the guy who will be taking 10 tries to do every trick, the one that can turn their board over and keep going is the one that embodies the purpose of having a whole park, especially one with this much flow and opportunity.ā€™ā€™ – Adam

Lets talk prizes! Over half a dozen decks were provided and given away to participants by Board Kennel, Trucks and wheels were supplied by Rick Tetz of CalStreets and to top it all off not only did Justin have a name pull for complete boards but he also graciously gave a ramp from his own personal collection to the participant he found most inspirational. James Guite was the lucky one and took home the funbox with kinked rail!

Lets take a moment to talk about the inspiration prize for a moment. It really boiled down to the level of enthusiasm and how well a contestant used the park. James used the park to the absolute best of his ability and used obstacles in ways that no one else did. Including and not limited to a hippie jump under a grind ledge, wallrides and rail dancing. This is the kind of stuff that is amazing to watch because you know with that mind set and the dedication to practice, this kid is going to be the one to beat before you know it.

The event took place the classic Boarder Labs X CalStreets Location at 1754 West 4th Avenue in Vancouver British Columbia. An extended thank you goes out to Graham Peat and Rick Tetz for providing the venue as well as tables. Microphone sound system was provided by Rick as well as the Facebook live stream if you managed to catch it. Adam and Rick both took photos and videos while Justin rocked the mic. Ivan Kal helped out with judging and hung out with the group.

You may be asking yourself ā€˜ā€™when is the next one?ā€™ā€™ For details regarding future events, get the official details on Facebook. CalStreets, Blade Fingerboard Park and Board Kennel all supply and share information regarding upcoming events as well as other fingerboard news. Itā€™s a bummer that the huge park is a once and a while thing but feel free to visit our smaller park every day at 1754 West 4th Avenue Vancouver BC.
