What started as a single board quickly multiplied, sparking the onset of the Sector 9 longboarding movement.

The brand’s unique name has its own quirky origin story, tied to a friend from Hawaii known for affectionately dubbing people as “nineballs.”

One day, he called to check in on the group, only to be greeted by the answering machine. His message, “What’s going on over there at Sector 9?” inadvertently coined a term that reflected the crew’s vibe—a household of nineballs.

This happened around the same time their beloved hill cruiser, a repurposed snowboard, was swiped from Northbird in La Jolla. As they were putting the final touches on a couple of replacement boards, they needed a logo. The message, with its catchy and fitting nature, inspired the name that would soon become iconic in the longboarding world.
