In 1988 Powell-Peralta ran an “Artist Wanted” advertisement in TWS and Thrasher. The contest “winner” would get a job in the Powell-Peralta art department in Santa Barbara. The artist selected was Sean Cliver, mainly because his illustration style closely resembled VCJ’s. Cliver’s first deck design, the Barbee Ragdoll, was a departure from the traditional VCJ look, but when it came time to update the Caballero dragon, Sean emulated the master. At some point later, someone dubbed the graphic Cab “Ban This” Dragon since it was prominently featured in that video (think slow-motion sequence).
Originally Released: 1988 – Artwork by: Sean Cliver. They are manufactured by our partners in Mexico or in our Ventura skateboard factory, which is still directed by a few of the same craftsmen that made them originally.

The status of the author (Sean Cliver) who landed his first job as a designer at Powell-Peralta in 89, allows him to guide the reader through his culture and his experience in the world of skateboarding. The collections of decks remain of course at the center of the book (by era and by brand, from the most retro to the most recent), but also inserts come to complete them with fascinating memories of personalities of the skate like Tony Hawk, Mike Vallely, Mark Gonzales, Mark Gator Rogowski, Steve Caballero and Stacy Peralta …
