This decision isn’t just cosmetic—it directly affects how your board performs, feels underfoot, and responds to different types of terrain. Understanding the distinction between these two mounting styles is key to choosing the board that matches your goals, whether you’re pushing for miles, bombing hills, or carving around your neighborhood.

A drop-through longboard has cutouts in the deck that allow the baseplates of the trucks to be mounted through the board itself, lowering the ride height and bringing the deck closer to the ground. This lowered center of gravity creates a very stable and comfortable ride, making drop-through setups ideal for beginners, commuters, and long-distance pushers. Because you’re closer to the pavement, each push takes less effort, which is a major advantage if you’re skating for hours or covering serious ground. The lowered platform also makes slides easier to initiate and control, which is why drop-through decks are popular for casual freeride and low-speed sliding. The downside is that you sacrifice a bit of grip in turns, and the board may not feel as locked-in when cornering aggressively. However, the lowered stance and built-in wheel clearance make drop-through decks forgiving and confidence-inspiring, especially if you’re just starting out.

Top mount decks, on the other hand, are mounted directly to the bottom of the board with no cutouts. This places the rider higher above the trucks and wheels, increasing leverage and responsiveness. Top mounts are favored by downhill racers and technical freeriders because they offer superior grip and control in turns. The higher ride height means more weight transfer over your trucks, which gives you powerful, aggressive carving and enhanced cornering ability. While they can feel twitchier and more demanding, especially at lower speeds, experienced riders appreciate the precision and edge control that top mounts provide. That said, the elevated platform requires more effort when pushing, and wheelbite is a bigger concern, often needing risers or wheel wells to compensate.

Choosing between these two setups ultimately comes down to your riding style. If your main goal is cruising, commuting, or pushing for long distances with ease and comfort, a drop-through will likely be the more enjoyable choice. If you’re drawn to downhill speed, tight carving, or technical freeride where grip and responsiveness are paramount, then a top mount might be the better fit. Some riders opt for hybrid decks, like drop-platforms or double-drops, which combine lowered platforms with varied mounting styles to offer a balance of both stability and control.

At CalStreets BoarderLabs, we carry both styles because we know each one has its place. Whether you’re gliding through your daily commute or gearing up for your next hill bomb, we can help you choose a setup that matches the way you want to ride.
